The power of vision and endurance

By Rebecca Plant

Brenn and Peta Fielding, Burleigh Brewing Co.

This is a big call, but Peta and Brennan Fielding of Burleigh Brewing Co. are hands down one of the BEST BUSINESS COUPLES I have ever come across. Not only are they both lovely human beings, they are also proud parents, have nurtured a loving marriage for 19 years, they are exceptional business operators and have nailed the art of building a business around their personal strengths.

Peta and Brennan joined forces to establish Burleigh Brewing Co. on Queensland’s Gold Coast more than 10 years ago, and literally pioneered the local craft beer market with their award-winning product. Peta wears the CEO hat while Brennan overseas the brewing operations, and together they’ve made their vision a super successful reality – and sustained it.

In this episode we chat about:

  • Raising children while building a business.
  • Growing from a team of 2 to 40 staff today.
  • Making the shift from DIY to grow their business.
  • The big benefits of buying in more brain power.
  • Those days when you simply can’t make another decision.
  • Their roles and how they set these up around their strengths.
  • Why working with your partner should be your Super Power.
  • Conflict and stress: how they’ve worked through it.
  • The tearful exchange that brought Brennan on board with Peta’s vision.
  • How the division between ‘Bedroom and Brewery’ has evolved over time.
  • Their rules around work talk (and how the kids enforce them!).
  • Planning on the road: why cars and planes are an ideal meeting space.
  • Avoiding those ‘time zappers’ that stop you from driving forward.
  • Changing demands on their time as their kids have grown.
  • The benefits of raising children within a business environment.
  • How their parenting roles have evolved.
  • Brennan’s shift from ‘technician’ to a more instinctive style of working.
  • Enduring the hard-slog phases as ‘steps to success’.
  • The importance of vision in motivating and building your team.
  • What they know now that they wish they’d known at the beginning.
